Cholera, Two die, 69 confirmed positive in Beitbridge
Staff Writer
Two people have died while 69 others have tested positive for cholera in the Beitbridge district since the beginning of March.
District Medical Officer (DMO), Dr. Lenos Samhere told Lotsha FM that the two deaths were recorded at the Dulivhadzimu bus terminus and the district referral Hospital respectively.
He said more awareness programs were being rolled out across the known hot-spot areas, especially in suburbs where there are sewer and water reticulation deficiencies.
Dr. Samhere said so far they have tested 173 cases of suspected cholera with 69 coming out positive after laboratory tests.
At the moment, he said they were treating seven active cases at the Cholera Treatment Camp, which is located just outside the main hospital yard.
He urged members of the community to swiftly report to medical facilities with all diarrhea-related cases to get urgent medical attention.
The medical doctor said people should continue practicing good hygiene, including washing hands, washing fruits and vegetables before consumption, and eating well-cooked and hot meals.
Cholera is a water-borne disease spread by consuming food or water contaminated by a germ called vibrio cholera.
It causes serious watery diarrhea and vomiting. If left untreated, it can cause severe dehydration or it can lead to death.
