Police in the Willysport area in South Africa on Wednesday seized a Mercedes Benz C220 and illicit cigarettes, worth R36700 which are suspected to have been smuggled into that country through an illegal crossing point at the Limpopo River.

The vehicle was intercepted at around 3 am near Makhado by a security team following a tip-off.

Limpopo police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Malasela Ledwaba said they tried to stop the vehicle after spotting it, but the driver sped off.

“In the process, he lost control of the vehicle, and drove over the traffic circle at three miles and it stopped. The suspect thereafter fled the scene on foot,” he said.

“The members searched the vehicle and found 367 boxes of Remington Gold cigarettes with an estimated street value of R36700”.

Lt Col Ledwaba said the suspect will soon appear in court pending further investigations.
