The government has started putting in the necessary mechanisms to combat polio following an outbreak of the disease in Botswana, Malawi, Mozambique, and Zambia.
In a public notice this week , the Ministry of Health and Child Care said it was embarking on phased series of polio supplementary immunization between 23 May and 26 May.
They are targeting to immunise all children below the age of five years.
The poliovirus spreads through the faecal oral route and children below the age of five years are at high risk of contracting polio and suffering from its complications.
The Ministry said the vaccination will enhance maximum protection against the threat of poliovirus and related avoidable paralysis and loss of life.
Community members are encouraged to take advantage of the supplementary immunization program.
